Rural Richland County

Hopkins, Eastover, Gadsden, Horrell Hill, and the rest of Lower Richland sit southeast of Columbia toward Congaree National Park. Properties out here run larger: long drives, ponds, open fields, wooded edges, working farms, and hunting tracts. The work is heavier and the water table is closer.

Water is usually the whole job

Parts of Lower Richland are low, flat ground tied to the Congaree River floodplain. Water has fewer places to go, so drives wash out, pond banks erode, fields stay saturated, and culverts that were sized in 1985 are undersized now. Most projects here come back to moving water on purpose: crowning a road, cutting swales and dry creeks, reshaping low spots, and setting crossings where they belong.
