Grinding beats digging on a finished lot

Pulling a stump with an excavator means a crater, a root ball to dispose of, and real risk to whatever is nearby — irrigation lines, a walkway, a driveway edge, the roots of the tree you kept. A grinder chews the stump and the root flare down below grade in place, so the hole is the size of the stump instead of the size of the machine. On an established yard that is almost always the right call.

How deep, and why it matters

Standard grinding takes the stump four to six inches below grade — enough to sod over, mow across, and forget about. If you intend to plant a new tree in the same spot, or pour concrete, or set a fence post there, say so up front, because that needs a deeper grind and the grindings need to come out rather than go back in.

Here is the part most people are not told: wood chips backfilled into a hole tie up soil nitrogen as they break down, and a new tree planted straight into that mix will sit there looking yellow and stalled for a couple of seasons. If something is going back in the same hole, we haul the grindings and bring in soil.

Surface roots too

The root flare running out from an old stump usually comes with it. In the Sandhills, pines and water oaks both surface roots aggressively in sandy ground, and those are the ones catching a mower deck or lifting a walkway. We grind what is reachable, root-rake the bed, and tell you honestly which roots belong to a tree you are keeping and should not be cut.

Access is the constraint

A stump grinder has to physically reach the stump. A standard machine needs roughly three feet of gate clearance; a backyard behind a narrow side yard, a locked gate, or a retaining wall changes which machine comes and what the job costs. We check that at the walk-through so there are no surprises on the morning.

• Grindings hauled off, or backfilled and crowned slightly to allow for settling

• Topsoil and seed or sod over the patch, if you want it finished

• Surrounding turf, beds, irrigation heads, and hardscape left intact
