AT A GLANCE

Conservation & Land Stewardship

COMMON JOB TYPES

Erosion and gully repair, slope stabilization, native and pollinator plantings, wildlife habitat, stream and pond buffers, and cover crops on bare ground

MATERIALS & SERVICES

Seed mixes for Sandhills and Piedmont sites, matting and matting staples, stone armoring, lime and amendments by soil test, and native plant material

Land work aimed at the long game: stopping erosion before it takes topsoil, putting native plant communities back where they belong, protecting pond banks and stream buffers, and building soil instead of mining it.

Stewardship is cheaper than repair

Every load of topsoil that leaves a property in a rainstorm is paid for twice: once when it goes, and again when someone hauls dirt back in. Most of our conservation work is unglamorous and permanent, which is the point.

What this covers

  • Erosion and gully repair, including armoring where water concentrates

  • Slope stabilization with grading, matting, seeding, and plant material

  • Native and pollinator plantings suited to Sandhills sand or Piedmont clay

  • Longleaf and hardwood edge work, edge feathering, and thinning for habitat

  • Stream, wetland, and pond buffers that filter runoff before it hits water

  • Cover crops and temporary seeding on cleared or idle ground

  • Soil health work: sampling, lime, organic matter, and compaction relief

Native plants are not a compromise

On sandy Sandhills sites, longleaf pine, turkey oak, wiregrass, and the plants that evolved with them hold ground and feed wildlife with no irrigation and almost no inputs. Fighting that with the wrong lawn or the wrong shrub is an expensive hobby. We plan plantings around what the site is, using Clemson Extension guidance on species and timing.

Programs worth knowing about

Federal and state conservation programs, including USDA NRCS cost-share programs, can help pay for practices like erosion control, habitat work, and forest stand improvement on qualifying land. We are not a consultant and we do not administer those programs, but we build the practices, and we will tell you when a project looks like something worth asking your local NRCS or Clemson Extension office about.
