Clay changes the plan

North of Columbia the soils carry more clay than the sandy ground to the south. Clay holds water and sheds it across the surface, so gravel drives rut, cleared ground erodes in the first storm, low spots stay wet for days, and pond sites actually hold water. That last one is an advantage: this is good country for a pond.
